This is a serious - but amusing - novel with interest far beyond gay readership. It is a book about love, relationships, trust and other timeless themes. The gay content is minimal, and to some extent, irrelevant. It's the progress of a life that veers from affluence to destitution and back. Great observations, good laughs and very moving moments (that are never bathetic) along with Thomson's excellent writing make this a book to spend time with. - Michael Reidy
